Themes and Influences Investigation - Years And Years

I have looked at the band Years & Years as I find inspiration through their use of lipsync, lighting and choreography.

Things To Consider

Some things I'd like to take into consideration is regards to my music video are the use of colour and the effect I'd like to achieve with it, also the use of typography and lighting. I have looked at various different videos and have found a few that highlight certain aspects of filming that have inspired me.

C O L O U R

I chose to use the video for Cool Kids by Echosmith as something to take inspiration from as I like the effect of having the band in fairly neutral and muted colours with a plain white background paireed with the vibrant colour of the "school" type setting, it allows the band to become a sort of narrator whilst still being connected to the story of the video.

L I G H T I N G

For lighting I chose to look at Taylor Swift's music video for Style, I chose this as the use of CGI to project images onto their skin could easily be recreated to a similar effect by using a projector. I took inspiration from this, as well as the other lighting effects used as it sets a clear atmosphere for the video.

I find inspiration from Wilkinson's Afterglow as again, like with the Echosmith video, I like the sense of narration & story telling provided by the typography.

Lyric Task

I have created a lyric video for my chosen song "Take It Or Leave it" by Cage The Elephant by using their existing music video & layering the lyrics over the top. After watching the video I decided that I wanted to make the lyrics look as though they belonged to a dodgy-dingy-karaoke era, as the video itself has been set to look retrospective (and is set in the 1970's). I then chose to use different animations, colours and fonts alongside the lyrics when the song neared the chorus and picked up in pace and also texture. 

In case the video above gets removed due to unseen copyright laws, below is the same except without the original music video in the background.

For my music video I've chosen to do "Take It Or Leave It" by Cage the Elephant. The genre of this song & band is Indie Rock, typical traits of this genre are:

• Low Budget, therefore there is often a lack of high end, sophisticated graphics or special FX
• Typically do not feature backing vocals strongly, and solos aren't hugely portrayed 
• Lyrics are usually melancholy or introspective
• There is often a strong DIY production ethic (whilst this isn't featured in my chosen song's pre-existing music video, which is structured to mimic a 1970's roller-derby expo, however I fully intend to utilise this specific technique)
